VaultedWorkplace (VWP) is True North Networks’ new
data backup solution that replaces tedious tape–swapping, and gets the
backup offsite in the bargain. For many years the industry standard has
been a software package that copies data onto a compact tape that can be
moved and stored easily. There are several weak points in this
traditional backup scheme, and newer technologies are making that
approach less compelling.
First, there is the up-front
cost for the tape drive itself, the tapes, and the backup
software. Next, one is confronted with the daily tasks required
for effective backups: regular media swaps, media set rotation,
and moving the tapes off-site so they are not lost to a calamity
that destroys the server too. Even if all that goes flawlessly,
you will eventually contend with software maintenance and
upgrades, drive cleaning, failures caused by tape wear, and
missed backups when a tape is not changed.
To remove some of those weak
points, many companies have switched to USB external disks,
which are far less expensive per gigabyte of storage, and are
for more durable than tapes. However, that switch has not
eliminated the human interaction required for good backups.
VaultedWorkplace replaces all these weaknesses with a 21st
century solution, so you can focus more of your energy on your
real line of business. With VaultedWorkplace you will see the
end of …
Forgotten media swaps … actually, no one
handles any media at all!
Buying, maintaining, and upgrading software
and replacing worn out tapes
Remembering to take backups off-site to guard
against a catastrophic loss like a fire
VaultedWorkplace is a service provided to True North Networks’ customers
using existing Internet connections. A small software agent is installed
on each server to be backed up, and the data to be protected is
identified and configured. At the scheduled time, the VWP agent contacts
a hardware-based storage vault in our co-location data center in
Manchester, NH. The agent and the vault establish a secure, encrypted
session and changed data is transmitted. There is no problem with
different data types – SQL databases, Exchange email systems, standard
files – VWP adjusts to all of them using the most efficient method.
In a variant of the VaultedWorkplace service, True North Networks also
hosts storage vaults owned by individual customers with larger backup
and storage needs. The point at which this approach becomes
cost-effective can vary greatly. It is best to engage True North
Networks in an analysis of your needs and data types to determine the
most effective options.
